Is it possible to use a gooseneck hitch with a shortbed truck?

I thought I was going to buy a Ford F150 and have a gooseneck hitch installed for a horse trailer. So I called around to get cost.
I have been told, you can do it but you will have to be very selective about the trailer you purchase. I have also been told if I purchased a 16 inch extension I could then purchase any trailer I wanted. Then I was told, you cannot pull a gooseneck with a shortbed.
This was 3 different trailer stores I called in our area. Boy am I confused.
Are there any of you out there that pull a gooseneck horse trailer with your shortbed, 5 feet 6 inches?
If so what kind of problems have you run into?

The ball hitch for a gooseneck trailer hitch is normally mounted in the bed of the truck directly over the rear axle, to allow for the best weight distribution from the trailer to the truck. With a short bed truck, the rear axle is farther forward, and if the hitch ball is properly installed, you end up with less distance between the back of the truck cab and the front of the trailer.

This could cause the front corners of the trailer to come in contact with the back of the cab during a sharp turn. Not a good thing.

Installing a 16 inch extension on the trailer allows the front of the trailer to sit farther back away from the truck cab, but also changes the balance of the trailer so you can't haul as much weight in the trailer.

Either way, if you go with a long bed truck instead of the short bed, you'll end up with a better balanced rig, which makes for better towing.

Good product

The product was good and as stated. It fit my needs. I attached it to a cargo carried on my Honda minivan. It helped raise the carrier such that when the van was fully loaded it did not bottom out as often. I used a hitch tightener which did touch the pavement when I pulled out of driveways etc.

Great concept...too short for a Jeep with a rear-mounted tire

I haven't actually used it yet but boy was I annoyed when I couldn't get it to go in all the way because the rear-mounted tire on my Jeep was in the way. Of course, that was my fault not to have determined that in advance. I ordered an extension, wchih should make it all work just fine. But, an extension takes away a some of the towing capacity and tongue weight. My suggestion to the manufacturer would be to measure up some Jeeps and other SUVs with a rear-mounted tire and then either add a longer version or just tack on 3-4 inches to this model. The seller was great about my order.
Can't wait to hook up my new teardrop trailer (from golittleguy.com) to the bottom receiver and install my Freedom Grill (from BadBoyGriller.com) on the top then head off to a State Park for a little camping next spring.
