trailer hitch dolly
What type of towing should I use for a 4250 lb. Ford Explorer 4wd, 4dr and 8 cyl?
I tried U-Haul car dollies and budget car dollies, but they all said it was too heavy for the dolly; even for the trailer hitch towing. I want to transport it 90 miles or so from point A to point B, so i need something that will hold on the expressway.
u haul and budget are not going to have the equipment that u will need. I have a F 350 1 ton truck with a 40 foot goose neck trailer that i haul cars on it. u will want to find a private car transporter in near you. just break out the yellow pages and start dialing. i wouldnt go through a "garage" or "shop" just find a private hauling company.

Renting A Moving Truck
Whether you're moving across the country or just down the street, if you're going to be transporting items that won't fit in a standard vehicle you may have to invest in a moving truck. Renting a truck is a great way to cut down on the time it takes to bring your belongings to and from your Atlanta storage unit. There are a few things to consider before renting a truck.
Where Are You Going?
When moving across the city, ask your Atlanta storage facility if they provide rental trucks to their customers or if they have a rental agency they recommend. Most rental agencies will be more than willing to accommodate you during your move. If you're making a further move say across the state or across the country, you will want to look into renting a truck that allows you to take the truck on a one-way trip. Some agencies will ask that you pay the extra cost to transport the moving truck back to its original location. Ask the rental agency up front the cost of the truck rental for a one-way trip and if there are any extra costs for this type of rental.
What Truck Size Do You Need?
Rental agencies provide a sizing guidelines based on the size of the rental truck and how much of your belongings it can hold. Making a list of the belongings you're going to place into your Atlanta storage so you can determine the size of rental truck you will need. Moving truck sizes range from 10' which will move a small one bedroom apartment to 26' which will move four to five bedrooms worth of stuff. It will be easier for you to compare the size of your Atlanta storage unit to the size of the rental truck. If you're unsure of the size of the truck to rent, it's better to be safe and rent a larger truck.
When Are You Moving?
Deciding when it will be the best time to move depends on the time of the month you will be moving to your Atlanta storage unit. Peak rental months run from the end of May until the end of September, if you're renting during this time expect to pay peak season rates. Rental truck agencies determine price based on supply and demand, most people move during the beginning or at the end of the month. If you're not in a pinch try to move mid-month to avoid higher rental rates and to guarantee an available truck in the size you need. Find yourself having to move during the peak season, call ahead to reserve a vehicle. If you can't decide on the size of the truck, go one size larger because trying to switch trucks the day of the rental can be a hassle.
Do You Need A Trailer?
If you're placing a vehicle in Atlanta storage renting a trailer may be a cheaper option than renting a moving truck. Trailer rentals run from $150 to $300, rates depend on when you will need the trailer and if you have to rent a trailer hitch. The rental company will be able to give you an estimate of the price.
Insurance
Just as Atlanta self storage facilities offer insurance to their customers while their belongings are being storage in the storage unit rental truck agencies offer additional insurance for their customers while they are on the road. Insurance can cost up to $30.00 per day. Make sure you read the fine-print to know what exactly the insurance covers before accepting the charges. Typical questions to ask is if the insurance covers larger vehicles, if you're towing your vehicle does it protect damages to your vehicle, collision protection, deductible, are the items being transported covered, does the coverage extend into other states and what happens if there is a theft. If you opt for the insurance make sure that you are fully protected against anything that could potentially happen during your move.
What Else?
Rental companies also provide rental pads and dollies to their customers. When transporting valuable pieces of furniture or antiques you'll want to use protective padding so the items don't get scratched or ripped during the move. Pads usually come in packages of 6, moving companies recommend 24 to 30 pads for a 3 to 4 bedroom house. Pads can also be used to slide heavier items around the truck. Renting a dollie will also make the move on and off of the truck into your Atlanta storage unit easier.
Ask the rental company if mileage charges are included in the vehicle rental. If you're traveling a long distance mileage charges can add up so read the fine print before signing your rental agreement. Also factor in the cost of gas into your budget because most likely you'll be required to return the vehicle with a full tank of gas. If you forget to fill up the take the company may charge a higher rate to fill up the tank. Also ask the rental company the mpg that the rental truck gets. Remember that the weight of the truck and whether or not you're towing something behind your truck can play a factor in the mpg you will get.
