Why do Americans buy SUVs?

Considering the fact that they cost a fortune to buy, insure and operate I have to wonder, do all of these SUV owning Americans have more money than they know what to do with? Or are they all being successfully manipulated by the auto industry into buying these highly profitable vehicles?

That's all I can come up with because nobody truly needs one. Cars transport people just fine, wagons carry people and their stuff, and pick-up trucks and vans do the heavy duty industrial hauling. What is the compelling reason to shell out thousands extra to buy an SUV and many thousands extra to insure and operate in the long run?

Safety? No, SUVs pose a greater hazard to all road users than cars and they offer very poor visibility. Comfort? Is it really that important to have a living room on wheels?

I drive an SUV because it does what I want. It allows me to be comfortable. I can carry passengers and cargo if I wish. It has four wheel drive, which is great in the winter. I can tow boats, campers and car trailers with it.

It is taller than a car, so I can see the road better. I do not know where you get the idea that they visibility is poor

It bothers the tree hugging wackos who think that we all should avoid any use of the internal combustion engine. It allows me to increase my carbon footprint, which should help prevent the ice age that we were warned about in the 1970's (by the same chicken little environmentalist loons) was going to destroy the planet
