What should I do about my car tire situtation?

I have a Subaru Forester with ("16?) wheels...and I'm going back home to California from here in Canada sometime. I'm not sure If it will be in winter, but I will be going over a few summits. It's only a day long drive...
We don't have a trailer hitch or a cargo box for our roof rack and we don't have enough room in our car...At the time we will most likely have our winter tires/crappy winter rims on. We have our original all seasons on our original subaru alloy wheels. I'm not sure how much it weighs, but..
I was just pondering, If we shipped it from the border (We are super close here) to Northern California, would it be worthwhile? If so, how much money would it take to do that?

Better yet, does anybody have any other ideas? Should we invest in a hitch or a cargo box? Should we switch our all seasons back on and just get come cables/chains?

Getting a trailer hitch installed would likely cost about three to four hundred dollars. A small cargo trailer could cost you another few hundred, maybe even a thousand depending upon how big and fancy you want it. (Or, you could rent one from U-Haul or a similar company.)
If you anticipate going back to Canada at some point, you'll probably want to keep the snow tires. If this isn't in your plans, sell them at a yard sale.

Truck Accessories and Truck Bed Accessories

Consumer demand for truck accessories and truck bed accessories is increasing. The increase in demand for truck accessories primarily reflects the increase in truck sales (Figure 1) but there are other factors also. Although 2009 showed a decrease in sales across the board for all domestic and import trucks (motorintelligence), 2010 showed a median increase of approximately 6%.

As the global economy bounces back from the recession and truck sales increase there will undoubtedly be an increase in consumer demand for truck racks and truck bed accessories of all kinds. This includes truck bed racks and accessories from cargo nets, bed liners, tonneau covers, shells, toolboxes, and utility racks, just to mention a few. However, this is not the only factor fueling market increase. "The light truck niche continues to represent the largest portion of the specialty equipment market for both manufactures and retail sales. In particular, pickup trucks have been the backbone of the light truck market for aftermarket parts…And they are used to tow boats, race cars and toys haulers" (2008 Light Truck Report).

The second factor in this equation is the increase in demand for sports accessories. Accessory demand follows the raise in sporting and health related activity. SIA Snow Show had a record-breaking $1 billion in sales for December, coupled by the 2011 snowfall totals (snewsnet.com). I do not think we need to statistically examine the trends to know that outdoor activities are on the raise. Simply look around your city and notice the building of sidewalks, bike paths, golf courses, community and state park recreation centers, mountain biking trails, off road motor vehicle parks, and a host of clubs to satisfy every sport enthusiast. Yes, there are a number of consumers that want to keep their truck as a workhorse for hauling trailers, campers, boats, and the like, but a growing number of truckers are adapting their rigs to fit their lifestyle outside of work. This trend has shown a rise in sales for trailer hitches, bicycle racks, kayak racks, surfboard racks, ski racks, cargo boxes, and baskets.

These are exciting times for truck lovers. There are now endless options of truck accessories and truck bed accessories to suit just about every consumer's desires. What the industry lacks will soon become a reality as the next wave of truck accessories hits the market.
