Subaru Impreza WRX STI as a winter car?
I'm in need of an AWD vehicle for next winter as I'm moving up to northern Alberta.
I. hate. trucks.
I'm seriously considering buying an STI, but I do have one concern. I have no issue doing paint protection, mud flaps, rock guards, etc. to ensure the car doesn't get ravaged by the north - I do have one large concern, however.
Does anyone have experience with rocks and the hood scoop? I'm concerned about sand and rocks being sucked in and causing damage to the engine.
I realize my question came out kind of lacking a point - I'm curious about both the current generation STI's winter practicality and how it stands up to rocks being sucked into the hood scoop.
Edit 2:
I'm referring to, as an example, a rock puncturing the inter cooler or causing physical damage to parts in the engine bay - not necessarily the sand and dust actually being sucked into the engine.

You shouldn't have to worry much about debris going into the hood scoop. Keep in mind these are rally bred cars where they drive triple digits on dirt, gravel, and tarmac. However, to keep your mind at ease you can easily purchase one of these

or just google STi hood scoop mesh. Cheap and easy to instal, no adverse effects. I actually have it installed on my WRX because the previous owner had a bird fly into his hood scoop and said it was a bitch to clean it out of the hoodscoop lol
as far as an STi for a winter car, I might suggest a WRX, for sole purpose that its a little easier to give it a little too much power in an STi than a WRX, which on icy conditions can get slippery. However, if you mind your driving, an STi is a very good winter car. I have a friend in Fairbanks AK and he has an STi and has never had an issue with sand, so you should be good to go.
