Dodge Ram Exhaust Very Hot at Tailpipe?
1996 Dodge Ram 5.9 1500
Replaced catalytic converter about a month ago . The symptons were lack of power and exhaust was very hot . The exhaust tail pipe was so hot it would melt my mud flaps . Replaced spark plugs, PCV valve , and installed a new catalytic converter from Napa ( aftermarket direct fit ) . I just noticed the tailpipe is hot starting to heat up again . Is there any other reasons why my exhaust is so hot other than a clogged cat ? Or what would cause the cat to get clogged in a month ?
Well, consider this. When your exhaust exits the engine and enters the exhaust tubing, it is anywhere from 1100-1500 degrees. That's hot. So, naturally, it depends on how well the heat is kept inside the piping and how much is dissipated to the outside air. If it is extremely hot, I would try to find the problem rather than just throw parts at it. Lean tuning will cause the engine to run hot, as will excessive ignition timing. Check the timing and throw some fuel injector cleaner in it to be on the safe side would be a good starting point.
