Can a sway bar affect the performance of the front shocks?

I purchased a Jeep J-10 fixer upper and just recently put a front sway bar on and heavy duty shocks. We drove it for the first time at end of august and it bounces all over the place. I checked rear suspension and ok. I checked front suspension and it appeared the front shocks were not being allowed to travel (jumped up and down on front bumper). I removed the quick connects for the front sway bar and removed the vertical links. Again, I checked the suspension and the front shocks were properly traveling. Drove it down the road and suspension no longer bouncing.
Questions: 1. has anyone had experience where the sway bar is limiting the travel of the shocks? 2. how risky is it to leave the sway bar off.
Last, I think I answered my question. The truck came with a 4-inch lift. However, I did not account for this on the sway bar. Does this play a role?

The sway bar does have a part in the way the suspension work but the way it sounds is that you don't have the proper sway bar link bushings. And as for your second question it can be very risky because the sway bar is what keeps the body from rolling the turns. What I would do for know is that I would reconnect the sway bar until I got the right sway bar link bushings. It will have to be after market sway bar link bushings because of the lift kit.
