My family owns a big repair facility. We work on both cars and heavy duty trucks. We have high-tech computers that match the dealers so we can work on things that only the dealer can do, and they are 3 hours away. Well alot of our old customers have gotten slow with the economic times and many have gone to other places that could support the accounts. But there places are 15 to 20 dollars more an hour than us. Would it be worth it to go to all the commercial customers and tell them we will do the work for like $55 an hour, it would be like $40 less an hour than the rest by far, but make it money only thing. Do you think they would go for that?

You just over-simplified a complex problem. Automobiles are not selling and cars are depreciating regardless. People are choosing to keep their old car rather than buy a new one. That part is good for you. However money if funny everywhere. To prefer cash is a downer and will result in fewer takers than accepting checks and credit cards also. Whoever can wait the longest is going to make the most money.

Those accounts that you sold could have kept you floating longer. It would however work it you did something like put a cap on when payments had to be made like 90 days. It would also work if you went into volume repairing/maintenance like guaranteeing turn-a-round in two days. The more creative you are, the more competitive.

You must come up with a new business strategy that will allow you survive this slump in economic conditions. Your customer base is an asset but you will find that they, too are going longer between repairs.
