I need a truck bigger than an HD pickup but smaller than an 18 wheeler?

Ok, I have a business where I will need loads up to 30 tons (legal limit in FL minus the 20k for the truck weight) in a small amount of space. I have looked at 18 wheelers, but these don't seem to suit my needs as they are very large with a 53' trailer being that I am only going to need about 25% of that. The HD trucks I have looked at are rated to haul around 28000lbs; which is only half of what I'm actually needing it to do. I don't know how to figure out what the towing capacity is for medium-heavy duty trucks, nor do I know much about smaller trailers for 18 wheelers. I'm not a truck driver or anything, but this is one of the major hangups of my business plan. The load is baled paper and has to remain covered to keep from weather damage if that helps.

If spec'd properly, an International 7300 CXT (a class 5 truck) will get you to 20 tons towing capacity but to get to 30 tons, you'll need something with the equivalent frame and size as one of those semi towing vehicles or a semi tractor itself. Neither the Chevy 4500 (class 4 truck) or International 4400 mentioned will get you close. Any class 7 or class 8 truck requires a Class B license. Basically, start checking out class 6's such as Ford F-650, International Durastar, or GMC Topkick C5500. I suspect you are going to have to tow as opposed to directly load your truck. When you are towing 30 tons, bigger is better or you'll work the truck to death.

OSHA specifications are actually a bit more specific, and they refer more to the type of vehicle than just the action of chocking. The reason for the specificity is that OSHA covers a broader industry than just mining.

Chock Sizes

With mining vehicles, they can be all shapes and sizes and work on many types of terrain. Using the Mining Wheel Chock

As noted above, the larger chocks for the big trucks with tire sizes from 110" to 165" most likely will need a cart to be put in place, yet the key is placing it correctly. The truck should be in Park and the parking brake in place before chocking. It will need the curved edge facing the tire, centered and in the direction of the grade. The vehicle must be on a firm surface and more than one pair may be needed. Guidelines for using it will probably be molded into the chock itself. Always use a mining wheel chock properly for the best in safety.
